Stormwater Management

As of March 7, 2014, the Village of Altmont received Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) permit coverage from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The MS4 permit is focused on eliminating pollutants from storm water runoff from our waterways. As part of the permit the Department of Public Works is developing and implementing a program to comply with the MS4 permit and help to protect these waterways from various pollutants.

Throughout the Village there are small streams which flow into reservoirs that are sources for drinking water. These streams will eventually flow into the Hudson River. Along the way, the water flow comes into contact with many living species. There are many pollutants found in storm water and storm water runoff which can cause harm to all users of the waterways, including the animals and plant species that live along these waterways. The MS4 permit and Federal Clean Water Act has tasked us to help protect these waterways from pollutans found in storm water.

The Village of Altamont urges every citizen to get involved and help protect our local streams, reservoirs, ponds, and wetlands from pollutants that can harm the users of these waterways and provide a clean environment in which all life forms can live.
