Nicholas Fahrenkopf graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in physics with a minor in mathematics from the University at Albany. He subsequently earned a Doctorate in nanoscale engineering for his research on field effect transistor-based DNA sensors from UAlbany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. Nick is currently employed as an engineering manager for the Research Foundation for SUNY, overseeing research and development projects for AIM Photonics, one of nine manufacturing innovation institutes established by the United States Department of Defense. He is also an adjunct professor at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute where he is co-PI on a National Science Foundation Future Manufacturing grant. He also lectures, advises, and mentors undergraduate and graduate students on silicon photonics and biosensors.
Nick is active in the community, previously advocating to keep Altamont Elementary School from closing, and previously serving on the Board of Directors of Altamont Community Tradition. As the liaison to the Fire Department, Nick regularly attends the Guilderland Fire Chiefs and Commissioners meetings where he also volunteers as the public information officer for that organization. Nick is also a long-time volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Albany. He lives in Altamont with his wife, Katie, and their two young daughters Adelaide and Eloise.
