Village of Altamont

Comprehensive Planning Process

Soon after his appointment in April 2005, Mayor Jim Gaughan asked Trustee Dean Whalen to appoint a Committee to develop an updated Comprehensive Plan for Altamont to guide the future growth and development of the Village, and to preserve and enhance our quality of life.   The last such Plan was completed in the 1970s, with various revisions being made to planning, zoning an other sections over the years.

The members of the Comprehensive Plan Committee are:

Dean Whalen, Village Trustee, Committee Chair

     Harvey Vlahos Trustee

     Don Cropsey, Village Building Inspector

Steve Parachini, Village Planning Board Chair

Tim McIntyre, Village Public Works Superintendent

Maurice McCormick, Village Zoning Board of Appeals Chair

Kate Provencher, Village Zoning Board of Appeals

     Kristin Casey, Community Volunteer

     John Smith, Community Volunteer

     Andrea Dean, Community Volunteer

In December 2005, the Committee prepared and distributed a Request for Proposals to secure the services of a professional planner to assist with development of the Plan, with the understanding that the Committee would provide as much volunteer help as possible.  A contract was awarded to Nan Stolzenburg, Community Planning & Environmental Associates @ www.planningbetterplaces.com because of her considerable experience with similar communities and her strong recommendations from previous clients.

Since January 2006, the Committee has been collecting background data to support the plan from census, State, County and Village sources, and developing a Community Survey to solicit direct input from every resident, landowner and business owner in Altamont.  The survey is being made available online at the Village website www.altamontvillage.org or in paper form at  Village Hall from March 25, 2006 to April 12, 2006.  The survey is completely confidential and provides essential input from the community to guide development of the Plan.

In addition to the survey, the Comprehensive Plan Committee will hold Public Workshops to give the community an opportunity to express their desires about the future of Altamont.  The first workshop will be held Saturday, April 8 from 10:00 am to noon at the Village Community Room.

Other workshops will be announced in the future as the Plan is developed so that the public is involved at every step of the process.  Minutes of the Committee meetings will appear on this site in the future.

The goal is to complete the 2006 Village of Altamont Comprehensive Plan with final citizen review and Village Board approval by December 31, 2006.
